Wax working technique

Lets make a Ring in Wax

And turn it into a unique Silver wearable piece of jewelry. In this Wax StarterClass, you create a ring from scratch in wax. Side by side I will guide you exactly how to, and explain all you need to know to create your unique ring in the best way possible.

Choose your Wax working technique;

Wax Carving
From a solid piece of wax you extract the shape, just as a sculptor carves a block of marble. This technique is best done with hard wax. You can cut, saw, and file or work the wax with different tools.

Within wax filing are many sub-techniques, such as texturing both by removing and adding material, filing a signet ring, carving a shape from a block, and much more.

Wax Building
As the name suggests, this technique is exactly the opposite of the previous one. Here you start from scratch and slowly build up the wax.

This is done by melting the wax and build it up through a drop technique. This can be done in ring form or in a spatial form. This technique is perfect for adding stones within the ring.

Wax Modeling
We do this with soft wax. We can shape this wax with the heat of our hands or another heat source. With this kind of wax you can make imprints like fingerprints or from other textures. You can form droplets and more. This technique is ideal if you like textures, and want to create playful objects and shapes.

Shaping Natural Elements
Leaves, twigs, seeds, wire, fabric and other materials can be shaped into wearable jewelry. The art is to work these items in such a way that you will still see the delicate textures after casting.

Mitsuro Hikime
This is a specific technique that gives a very recognizable visual result. The malleable yellow wax is like a kind of hard chewing gum, you can use it to pull strands that make a structure of lines. You can roll, curl and work these into beautiful shapes to make pendants, brooches and rings. This technique is very fun and playful. Mitsuro Hikime is an ancient Japanese art form since at least the year 1300.
